My Experience

Beginnings

This computer has been in my family for most of my life, and can't think of a time when it was not there. This was THE computer that I enjoyed SimCity4 Deluxe Edition on. Since the Integrated Graphics are so bad, the game only runs around 15 FPS. But at the time, I still played games and enjoyed it. I spent countless hours blowing up the cities with disasters, and attempting to build one. Usually it ended with mass pollution, and horrible budgeting. The Dell was the family's computer from 2003-Sometime in 2010 give or take.

The Fall

When it became the old computer in the house, it sat in the basement, powered off. Occasionally I remember powering it on and waiting 15+ minutes for it to boot up, just to screw around with it. That was when I was a little older and got tired of SimCity4. Eventually, I started to take it apart and look around, and one day, I just took it upstairs and it became mine. No one really cared, since it got replaced by newer stuff. For a while, it just sat in my closet because I did not know what to do with it.

The Rise

When I grew older, I decided to try my best to restore it. I wiped the old installation of Windows XP Home and upgraded the Hard drive to a 1TB Seagate (used a SATA to IDE adapter). This was a massive improvement because it reduced loading times and made it a lot more usable. For the longest time, the top DVD drive did not work because of a jammed CD stuck inside of it. I took out the drive, dismantled it, and tried to unjam it. I had to destroy the DVD drive in order to get the disc out. I had this ugly hole in the case with nothing to put in it. In the last couple months, I was gifted an extra floppy drive from a friend and 3D printed a 5.25 inch to 3.5-inch bay. I am really happy on how it turned out. In this configuration, the computer did not come with a floppy drive, so this was a welcome addition.

The Future

Looking into the future of upgrades, the graphics are the bottleneck right now. Sadly, this computer does not come with an AGP slot (because of Dell being cheap), so that rules out most graphics cards to give it a boost. It is possible to get a PCI graphics card, and have seen videos of it working. Thanks for coming along on this wild ride with me!

~~APPENDIX 3-17-2021~~
WELL THE FUTURE IS NOW! I bought a Geforce FX5200 for around ~20 freedom dollars and can't be happier! It runs so much smoother and dragging of the window contents actually works. The dual monitors also are really nice and complete the experience. Also with the addition of this graphics card, I can try Windows Aero in Vista. It makes this 2003 computer feel so modern and can even connect to my SMB share natively!

So, what is with this looping annoyance at the top of the page?

This was a promotional video by Dell found on this computer in the Videos folder. Who knows, my Dell Dimension 2400 could have been in this video. Not much is known about this clip, other than its name, Experience.mpg. It is exactly 1 minute and 15 seconds long, and was created on August 22nd, 2003 at 8:46 AM. It is 66.2 MB in size. Below, is the video converted to mp4 so it can be played on the website. Experience.mp4 doesn't have the same ring to it.
