Intel Corp. this week mounts its defense of the high end of the personal computer market, introducing a chip called Pentium II that raises the performance bar for the company's rivals. The new microprocessor is expected to be 20% to 50% faster than the flagship Pentium line, launched four years ago. Pentium II also costs more. The chips range from 27% to over three times more expensive than the most powerful Pentium chip. PC makers are expected to use the new chips in machines that are priced at $2,500 to $4,000, targeting professionals and corporate customers who demand extra power for tough computing jobs. Analysts see the new systems as a shot in the arm for what is typically a lackluster second quarter for PC sales, one that will inspire a midyear upgrade cycle.
